Maia Sandu ready to confront Igor Dodon in presidential elections

The Action and Solidarity Party in March will stage a congress to discuss the potential candidates for President, stated the PAS leader Maia Sandu. She noted that if the party decides she should run, she will accept to confront President Igor Dodon, IPN reports.

“The PAS will support a candidate who has the biggest chances of defeating Dodon. Evidently, this should be a candidate who would build democratic institutions, would support the building of democratic institutions,” the politician stated in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.

According to her, in 2016 Igor Dodon was helped by the former Democratic leader Vladimir Plahotniuc to win office of President and a number of elements prevented the holding of free and fair elections. “Now, on the one hand, he has instruments he possesses directly, not through the agency of Plahotniuc. On the other hand, Dodon assumed complete responsibility for the situation in the country,” said the ex-Premier.

“We can beat Igor Dodon if we are united in the upcoming campaign, if we engage all the people who can help us, if we are credible, if we also manage to persuade the diaspora that is an extremely important element for the Republic of Moldova”

Maia Sandu also said that the PAS is ready to have discussions with members of the newly formed “Union” Political Movement. “We had preliminary discussions with some of the representatives of this bloc and agreed that our opponent in this struggle is Igor Dodon. He is a danger for the Republic of Moldova and we are ready to conclude a nonaggression pact and to conduct a correct campaign in relation to others so that this campaign, especially before the first round of voting, does not affect the runoffs,” noted the politician.
