Maia Sandu on visit to Romania: What we see in Timisoara, we also want for Moldova

President Maia Sandu arrived in Timisoara - the Romanian city that she says is a European one both through its cultural richness and diversity and also through its historical role in the Romanians’ fight for freedom and democracy. “What we see in Timisoara, what we see in European cities, we also want for Moldova,” said the head of state, being quoted by IPN.

Maia Sandu noted that Timisoara, which benefited from Romania’s accession to the European Union, is a good example of what Europe represents: freedom and welfare, decent jobs, modern infrastructure and a rich cultural life.

“It was a joy to come here after a year during which Timisoara held the title of cultural capital. On this occasion, I thank Mayor Dominic Fritz for the invitation. I was deeply impressed by the exhibition dedicated to Constantin Brancusi at the National Museum of Art, where I was accompanied by the head of Timis County Council Alin Nica,” said President Sandu.

The official also had a discussion with Moldovan citizens who settled in Timisoara. Maia Sandu urged them to return to the country to help modernize Moldova and lend a hand in the process of joining the European Union.

On January 13, President Sandu will be welcomed at the Royal Castle of Săvârșin by Her Majesty Margareta, Custodian of the Crown of Romania, and His Royal Highness, Prince Radu. Also on Saturday, the Moldovan official will take part in the Timisoara for European Values Award Gala. She is the first laureate of this award that was instituted by the Municipality of Timisoara in 2023.
