The testimonies of those who fought in the Dniester War are filled with pain, but above all, they are marked by dignity, courage, and love for the nation. President Maia Sandu stated this, emphasizing that veterans serve as an example and a lesson for all, and that honoring the memory of the heroes is a moral duty for everyone, IPN reports.
"Today, on the Day of Remembrance and Gratitude, we bow before the self-sacrifice, bravery, and patriotism that you and your comrades-in-arms demonstrated 33 years ago," the head of state declared at the commemorative gathering held at the "Eternity" Memorial Complex.
The president stressed the importance of young generations knowing history, standing by the nation's heroes, supporting the mothers of the fallen, the families left without a father, son, or brother, and never forgetting the immense price paid for freedom and peace - especially now, as yet another ruthless war unfolds just a few hundred kilometers away.
"The conflict on the Dniester was not a local one; it was ignited by Russia to weaken, divide, and control us. Just as it was then, today there are attempts to divide and pit us against each other. But just as before, people on both banks of the river have nothing to divide - we share the same concerns, the same needs, the same aspirations," Maia Sandu said.
"Whether we live in Chisinau or Tiraspol, Cahul or Tighina, Soroca or Ribnita, we all want the same thing - a secure future for our children, a dignified life without fear and deprivation. And we want to be free, to build this future in peace," the president noted.
Maia Sandu called for the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of the Republic of Moldova, stating that the people here want to be a free nation, to see Moldova as part of the democratic, European world, where life is respected, and conflicts are resolved through dialogue, not weapons.
"Dear veterans, we know that the burden of war does not end when the fighting stops, that wounds remain - both visible and invisible. But we also know that we are a nation of fighters for peace, and you are the proof of that. And we know that without you, we would not be here today. On this Day of Remembrance, with deep gratitude and respect, I say - you are not forgotten!" the president concluded.
March 2 marks 33 years since the start of the armed struggle for the territorial integrity and independence of the Republic of Moldova.
