Maia Sandu: On May 21 we want apolitical Assembly, of citizens

A statement that will confirm the citizens’ support for the European course of the Republic of Moldova can be adopted in the “European Moldova” Assembly set for May 21, said President Maia Sandu, who noted that the event will be apolitical, of the citizens. She commented on Chisinau mayor Ion Ceban’s initiative to sign a pact similar to the Snagov Pact, saying that the situation of the Republic of Moldova cannot be compared with that of Romania, IPN reports.

President Sandu said that consultations with representatives of civil society on the proper conduct of the “
European Moldova” Assembly will be held. Representatives of political parties will be invited to discussions.

“We will need the Government’s contribution at logistical level. We want this to be an assembly of the citizens, an apolitical gathering. We launched the process of consultations with civil society. At the moment, we consider we should invite renowned, respected people to come and talk before the citizens. There will be consultations with representatives of political parties. We bank on everyone’s assistance in organizing this event. We want all those who can distribute information about this event, can mobilize and persuade the people to come to the event to do this,” Maia Sandu stated in the program “Secrets of the Power” on JurnalTV channel.

The official noted that the event that is to be staged in the central square of Chisinau on May 21 is not political, but is of the citizens. She referred to the intention of a series of parties to take part in the “
European Moldova” Assembly.

“It’s clear that there are people who will want to profit, to discredit this event. I think we must not devote attention to them. We address the citizens, those who believe in a democratic society, who realize that the Republic of Moldova as part of the European Union has the chance to strengthen democracy, to ensure welfare, to be part of a peace project. Those who want to cause situations of scandal, can do it, but not with our contribution. We are waiting for the citizens at this event,” said President Sandu.

Earlier, the leader of the National Alternativa Movement Ion Ceban proposed signing a pact similar to the Snagov Pact by which to declare the European integration a national idea.

“In Romania, things were different than the current situation in our country. In Romania, all the political parties worked for Romania’s interests. We have a geopolitical situation when a part of the parties here serve the interests of the Russian Federation. Respectively, the situations are not comparable. Our proposal is to have a statement by which to confirm the support of those who will take part in this assembly for the European course of the Republic of Moldova, for accession to the EU,” noted Maia Sandu.

The “European Moldova” Assembly is to transmit a firm message to the international community about the Moldovan citizens’ sincere wish to be part of the European family. The event will be staged ahead of the European Political Community Summit that will take place in Moldova on June 1.
