Ex-minister of education Maia Sandu on August 31 was fielded as a candidate for President. A decision to this effect was taken by the National Political Council of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS), which also decided to create an initiative group for collecting signatures in favor of Maia Sandu. The initiative group consists of 99 persons and is led by Igor Grosu, IPN reports.

The members of the Political Council and of the initiative group and members and supporters of the PAS later took part in the event held to launch the signature collection campaign entitled “Support Maia Sandu!”, which will start when the Central Election Commission registers the initiative group.

“I call on all those who are present here and on all the people of the Republic of Moldova who are tired of robbery and corruption to start from the presidential institutions and clean up the political class and regain Moldova’s independence! I make this call because I know what we have to do and how we must act! The Republic of Moldova needs a President of the people, not of the ‘expired’ political class. A President elected by the people in whom the people have confidence can change things in accordance with the law, within a constitutional framework, and can free the state from the captivity of a corrupt and noxious political class,” said Maia Sandu, being quoted in a press release of the PAS.

Under the decision of the National Political Council, Maia Sandu, Igor Grosu and other PAS members later today will go to the Central Election Commission to file the documents needed for having the initiative group registered.

The Party “Action and Solidarity” is one of the three parties that announced their intention to field a common candidate and offered the people the possibility of choosing between the chairman of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase and the PAS leader Maia Sandu. A decision will be taken towards the end of September. The Liberal Democratic Party announced that it will support any of the two politicians.
