Maia Sandu: Moldova should access EU macro-financial assistance as a matter of urgency

The deadline for accessing the macro-financial assistance of the EU expires in July. This means that the two tranches should be obtained as a matter of urgency, said the leader of the Action and Solidarity Party. In a news conference on May 11, Maia Sandu noted that work should be done in Parliament during the next few days so as to meet the conditions for obtaining the second tranche and then swift work should be done to fulfill the conditions for the third tranche of macro-financial assistance, IPN reports.

“I remind that we speak about €70 million,” said the PAS leader. She noted that this money, if it is obtained, can be used to support companies and the people in the economic crisis generated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Maia Sandu said the penalties added to the law on the fight against money laundering should be adopted in the second reading. Other conditions refer to the progress in recovering the stolen bank funds, the justice sector reform and a plan of action for doing this, the adoption of the law on NGOs in the final reading, the announcing of an independent audit at the Audiovisual Council and the Competition Council, etc.

One of the most important conditions for disbursing the third tranche is the adoption of a law on the de-monopolization of the gas sector by which to legally, functionally and fully separate Moldovatransgaz and Chisinau-Gaz from Moldovagaz.

“Regrettably, we face this economic and sanitary crisis with a government that is incapable and irresponsible. Before this crisis, the Government approved a budget with a deficit for which the financing sources were unrealistic and now the situation worsened further,” stated the politician.

MP Igor Grosu, who heads the PAS group in Parliament, said that immediately after May 15, when the state of emergency is to be lifted and Parliament will function, the laws needed to get those funds should be adopted with the political will of all the players. He noted he will make effort to discuss with the heads of parliamentary groups so as to agree the Parliament’s agenda on the bills that should be adopted in the final reading.
