Maia Sandu: Mixed electoral system opens up more gates for rigging

The mixed-member electoral system proposed by the government is a poor one because it opens up more gates for election rigging. This system will enable to steal votes in the next parliamentary elections, leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu stated in the program “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.

“The Democratic Party is trying to steal our votes. This party is expected to gain only about 3% of the poll in elections and is thus justly concerned that it would not enter the next Parliament, that it would not control the state institutions and this mafiotic system that they built and by which they pursue their goals, gather wealth and protect their freedom will then fall apart. That’s why they look for methods to change the situation,” stated Maia Sandu.

According to the PAS leader, in its opinion the Venice Commission says it clearly that the risk that constituency members of Parliament would be vulnerable to being influenced by particular wealthy persons is very high. “So, it is said clearly that the PDM would be able to buy these MPs,” said Maia Sandu.

She noted that the European Union is the most important partner of Moldova when it is about the protection of the democratic processes and this has instruments to make the government give up the idea of introducing the mixed-member system. The EU actually understood what the government of Moldova does.
