The bloodiest war that claimed millions of lives, including on our land, ended on May 9, 1945. The foundations for real and sustainable peace in Europe were laid on May 9, 1950, when the two great powers, France and Germany, decided to bring the historical rivalries to an end and to build a community of European countries, laying thus the bases of the European Union. Therefore, May 9 has a double meaning, said the president of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu, co-president of the Bloc ACUM, IPN reports.
In an event staged in front of the Parliament Building on May 9, Maia Sandu said May 9 has multiple meanings for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. World War II left deep imprints in the collective memory. Tens of thousands of people from Bessarabia had to struggle against each other. That’s why this war cannot have winners and losers in the opinion of the Moldovan citizens, regardless of their ethnicity and political beliefs, as each family mourns for one or more members who were killed in battle.
The PAS leader noted May 9 is a day when hope is put into the future as the European Union is not only a destination, but also a development model. The EU is the shortest road to freedom and welfare, to democracy and modernization. “The European Union for us means a family of which we want to form part,” stated Maia Sandu.
Vice president of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform” Alexandru Slusari said May 9 is a memory day and also a day of sadness. “The bloodiest world war that claimed millions of lives ended on this day 74 years ago. But this holiday is also a reason for sadness as, even if so many years passed, society is further divided by the efforts of politicians. Friends, our country more than ever needs reconciliation. Society was divided artificially, including over the subject of World War II on this territory,” he stated.
The representatives of the Bloc ACUM made public a statement. “We invite the citizens of the Republic of Moldova to celebrate May 9 through a common event of recollection, compassion and tolerance. It is a symbolic moment when we can reaffirm our commitment to democracy, the rule of law, individual freedoms and prosperity. These are values that the Bloc ACUM Platform DA and PAS assumes together with the struggle for the European future of the Republic of Moldova,” said ACUM MP Octavian Țîcu, reading the statement.
After the event, participants distributed informative materials about the European Union on the streets of the capital city. Later, these went to lay flowers at the Cemetery of Heroes and at the Memorial Complex “Eternity” in Chisinau.
