The Republic of Moldova has a real chance to make profound, systemic changes in the justice sector reform. The reformation of this sector is the government’s and also the citizens’ key priority, President Maia Sandu stated in the “Justice Sector Reform and Corruption Fighting” Forum that was staged by the Legal Resources Center from Moldova. The official noted that after a number of failed attempts to bring things in the justice sector in order, a chance now appeared to move things on. There are all the preconditions for the purpose, including political will, which is the most importing thing, IPN reports.
“Today the country’s administration – the President, the parliamentary majority, the government – want the institutions in the justice sector to become functional, independent and to act with integrity and professionalism,” said President Sandu.
She noted that this reform is a duty before the citizens and the whole society as society asked this and the citizens voted for this. “The justice sector reform is aimed at one sector, but its effects will be felt by the whole society. The restoration of confidence in justice is a precondition for the people to regain confidence in the Republic of Moldova as a state. Investments in the economy, development of businesses, collection of taxes, quality of public services and, ultimately, the quality of living conditions in our country depend on this. The fight against corruption also forms part of this equation. Corruption hampers the country’s development. It is one of the main causes of the poverty we face. We aim to fight grand corruption, the offenders who transformed the state institutions into a source of personal income. But this scourge should be eliminated at all the levels,” said the official.
Besides the eradication of grand corruption, Maia Sandu underlined the necessity of eliminating the corruption faced by the citizens daily, when they ask for a public service. The changes in the justice sector and the fight against corruption already started and they will continue without any hesitation.
In this connection, President Sandu called on the employees of the judiciary and the law enforcement agencies to lend a hand so that the transformation takes place faster, in the interest of all those involved and for the benefit of the whole society. Things in the justice sector can be improved by a common effort. The mechanism for assessing the performance and integrity of everyone will be put into practice. The resistance will yet make the citizens further lose confidence in the sector.
Maia Sandu underlined that the prosperity of the citizens and the country depends on the justice sector reform. “The future of our country, the prosperity of the people and the state depend on our capacity to intervene swiftly in the justice sector and the fight against corruption and also on the credibility and irreversible character of the made changes. These are processes that should be managed correctly, in strict compliance with the spirit of the law. We, being guided by our commitment to the citizens, are decided to act determinedly and quickly, with new, targeted and efficient measures,” said the official, noting only the concerted efforts can ensure the success of the justice sector reform.
