If the justice system worked, we would not have reached such a high level of electoral corruption, says President Maia Sandu. The head of state says there is a problem with the process of external evaluation of prosecutors in the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, while things are more encouraging in the case of judges, IPN reports.
"At times justice has yielded results, here I am referring to the external evaluation of judges, where we have some progress. But there are more serious problems with the extraordinary external evaluation of prosecutors. The readiness of prosecutors from the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office to go through this examination leaves something to be desired. Vetting Commission 3 did not stick to the established deadlines, and this creates difficulties," Maia Sandu said at a press conference.
According to the head of state, there are serious shortcomings in the fight against grand corruption. Referring to the presidential elections and referendum, Maia Sandu said that more attention is needed to fight electoral corruption.
"The expectations are especially in relation to the finality of these cases of big corruption, on the cases of political corruption that have affected not only the image of the country, but also each individual citizen. The proposal that I made at the last meeting of the Supreme Security Council was that the Parliament should intervene and by law set relatively restricted deadlines", Maia Sandu said.
The President proposes that the time taken to examine these cases should not exceed six months.
"In general, this is a matter for the prosecution. The Prosecutor General, the heads of the specialized prosecutor's offices are responsible for the speed and the quality with which the Prosecution works on these cases. Plus the PSC and, on the other hand, the SCM is the institution that has to self-examine. We have a reformed SCM, made up of members who have passed the external evaluation and the tools are there", the head of state emphasized.
The President also said that the authorities will continue to work to meet these challenges and improve the justice system.
