Maia Sandu: It is Government’s responsibility to allocate money for organizing elections

It is the Government’s responsibility to allocate money and to finance the organization of elections, either it goes to snap parliamentary elections or the presidential elections, President Maia Sandu stated in a live program in which she responded to questions put by Moldovans living in Spain and Portugal and, in particular, the question about eventual donations for organizing snap parliamentary elections, IPN reports.

“The persons should not contribute financially to holding the snap parliamentary elections. I want this message to be clear. It is the responsibility of the state, the Government to allocate money and to finance the elections, either it goes to snap parliamentary local or presidential elections. [...] We appreciate your generosity, but it is not the case. It is not true that I said the people from the diaspora should pay ... In accordance with the law, the Government will allocate money for organizing the elections,” stated Maia Sandu.

In another development, President Sandu said that Parliament support is needed for fulfilling the promises made in the election campaign, but the outgoing Parliament does not include a majority that would support laws to enable the justice sector to be reformed, to bring things at the state institutions in order so that Moldova’s economy develops and opportunities are created at home and billions from the state budget are not used by someone for the own benefit, but is directed for pensions and salaries. That’s why snap elections are needed. The power is in the hands of the people and they should go and vote for those who will represent them during the next four years.

“We must do our best to elect a majority of MPs who would support all these things you want,” stated Maia Sandu, noting the elections should be free and fair and this is a challenge for Moldova where the institutions are weak and are controlled by corrupt groups.

The official also said that those from diaspora, so as to shorten the distance to polling places, should register on the website of the Central Election Commission as the larger the number of people who will register is, the greater the chance for polling stations to be established nearby will be.
