Maia Sandu in Washington: Government is determined to restore democratic processes

Prime Minister Maia Sandu assured Washington that the Moldovan government is unequivocally determined to restore democratic processes in the Republic of Moldova. The statement was made during a meeting with Tim Morrison, special assistant to the US president and a member of the National Security Council. In turn, the US official confirmed the US support for the Republic of Moldova.

"We will continue to fight for justice reform, no matter how difficult it may be. We will fight for the selection of an independent general prosecutor. The system must be cleansed, even if a lot of resistance is encountered”, said Maia Sandu, quoted in a press release issued by the government.

The case of the banking system theft was one of the key topics discussed at the meeting. The prime minister called for the support of US authorities for the investigation of money laundering and the theft of the billion, as well as for capturing those responsible and recovering the stolen property. Tim Morrison provided assurances of support and cooperation from US law enforcement in this regard. The official stressed the importance of the rule of law and said that these persons should be brought before justice if there is evidence that they were involved in criminal activities.

Additionally, Maia Sandu met with Ivanka Trump, the adviser to the US president. During the meeting, the White House official reconfirmed the American support for the Republic of Moldova. The dialogue included topics such as anti-corruption reforms, attracting investments in the Moldovan economy, promoting women's involvement in business and politics and ensuring equal opportunities for all citizens.

Ivanka Trump highlighted the decisive importance of the anti-corruption effort for Moldova's ability to attract investment and create jobs. "The US will continue to support the Republic of Moldova in implementing democratic reforms, but also in developing women's empowerment programs, as well as ensuring equal opportunities to encourage women to get into business", said the adviser of the US president, Ivanka Trump.
