Maia Sandu in Paris: Stepping up of efforts will enable to restore justice

The stepping up of efforts to fight corruption will enable the Republic of Moldova to restore the functionality of the justice system and to further center on the realization of the country’s potential, President Maia Sandu stated in a meeting with her French counterpart Emmanuel Macron during a visit made by a Moldovan delegation to Paris to take part in the Peace Forum, IPN reports.

According to the presidential press service, it was noted that France is an important strategic partner of Moldova and a friend that supports the efforts to clean up the state and to develop the Republic of Moldova by the European model. In the meeting, the two Presidents discussed a number of subjects concerning the extension of the bilateral relations and the cooperation opportunities in such areas as infrastructure, digitization, security and energy efficiency. “We are glad that the French Development Agency (AfD) already started work in our country and will finance local infrastructure, irrigation and afforestation projects,” stated Maia Sandu.

In a panel discussion on women’ leadership as part of the ceremony to open the Peace Forum, President Sandu debated the gender equality issue and the problems faced by women in politics. “Despite the improvements witnessed in Moldova in this regard, more is yet to be done to reduce social and economic inequities in our country,” she stated.

Whaler in Paris, President Sandu also met with her Estonian concerti Alar Karis and with her Icelandic counterpart Guðni Jóhannesson. At the end of the visit, the official took part in the celebration of the 75th anniversary of UNESCO, where she said that Moldova shares the humanist values of UNESCO and will continue to cooperate with this organization so as to promote innovation, digitization, education and safeguarding of the national cultural heritage.

Also in Paris, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Europeans Integration Nicu Popescu, in a meeting with Alstom director general Henri Poupart-Lafarge and director for public affairs Philippe Deleur, said that Moldova needs active economic diplomacy aimed at attracting investment to the national economy. “The modernization of our railways with the support of France was one of the key subjects of the agreements reached during a visit paid to Chisinau by Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian,” he stated.
