Maia Sandu in Comrat: Studying of Romanian is one of basics of social cohesion

Studying of the Romanian language is important. This is also one of the basics of social cohesion for including Gagauzia in the cultural, social and political life of the country, President Maia Sandu stated at the Comrat State University. She noted that there is interest in studying Romanian, while multilingual education can be a solution for keeping the Gagauz language and for learning Romanian, IPN reports.

“The Bashkan of Gagauzia Irina Vlah gave an example that is worth being followed as she declared and showed that she speaks the Romanian language. It is necessary to enable all the inhabitants of the autonomous unit to study the Romanian language so as to offer more opportunities to everyone. On January 1, 2023, we launch a national program for studying the Romanian language. Multilingual education – teaching of different subjects in several languages in kindergartens and schools in Gagauzia – can be a solution for keeping the Gagauz language and for studying the Romanian language,” stated President Sandu.

The official noted that the Gagauz language has been used less in schools and in daily life and is close to extinction. This problem should be addressed together and serious effort should be made to keep the Gagauz language and culture for the present and future generations.

Maia Sandu also said that the European Union is the biggest donor for Gagauzia. The support provided to the local authorities, the infrastructure projects, the support for agriculture and local development are only several of the EU’s investment directions. Famous international experts, including experts from Gagauzia, reached the conclusion that no autonomous unit in the EU has such broad powers as Moldova’s Gagauz-Yeri. The EU has many autonomous units. The subjects of the Russian Federation, either republics, territories or districts, do not enjoy the same powers as Gagauz-Yeri does. The autonomous region’s powers need to be regulated and harmonized with the legislation so that they are extensively applied. There is a dialogue between the central and local authorities on the delimitation of the powers defined by the legislation. Everyone wants this harmonization to advance faster, but this is a technical, not a political problem.
