Maia Sandu: I hope this government will last for at least a year

Prime Minister Maia Sandu believes that snap elections are imminent in Moldova, even if she is not sure about when this might happen. In an interview with Ukraine’s Radio Svoboda, Sandu said that it takes time to clean up state institutions and reform the insides of the system, which could take several months. “I would like this government to last for at least a year”, said Maia Sandu.

“I think that government agencies can be cleaned up in a couple of months. After that, a few other months are needed to re-staff them with people who can reform them from the inside. This is what we aim for,” the prime minister stated.

Maia Sandu says that a temporary coalition with the PSRM was needed in order to “cleanse the oligarchic system and make it work to fight corruption.” She added that, despite professing to be democratic and pro-European, the previous government did not lead Moldova on a democratic and pro-European path.

“It was a regime that canceled the elections when the outcome was not favorable for them. It was an extremely corrupt regime. The whole world already knows about the corrupt schemes ran in Moldova, including the bank embezzlements. We reached a situation where there simply was no other option,” said Maia Sandu.

The Prime Minister also added that the former government has discredited the European model of development. “Half of the country’s population thinks we would be better off having an authoritarian government like the Kremlin model, because they think democracy is responsible for poverty, migration and corruption,” says Sandu, adding that the current government wants to prove what a European model of governance actually means, and consequently increase the support for the European integration of the country.
