Maia Sandu: Government ordered to raise salaries, but didn’t allocate money

The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” (PAS) Maia Sandu said the current government ordered to raise the salaries of teachers of universities, centers of excellence and vocational education institutions, but didn’t allocate money for the raises to be possible. Videoconferencing through a social networking site while in the front of the Moldova State University, Maia Sandu said she made an inquiry to the Ministry of Finance to find out how things stand in this regard, IPN reports.

According to the politician, a number of media outlets recently reported that the universities, centers of excellence and vocational education institutions do not have enough funds to pay the raised salaries announced by the government. The education trade unions did some calculations and these show the 27 education institutions need an extra 120 million lei to be able to pay higher salaries until the end of 2019.

Maia Sandu noted that if these resources are not allocated by the government, the higher education establishments, centers of excellence and professional education institutions could pay salaries only for the first six-eight months of the year. “The situation is serous and this was reached owing to the irresponsible government. A university is good when it has very good teachers, while the good teachers are attracted and kept at institutions when the salaries are appropriate,” she stated.

Therefore, the PAS leader requested the Ministry of Finance to clarify things. “Each time the minister of finance says that everything is ok. We will see what he says this time,” noted Maia Sandu.

The main salary of teachers and scientific-teaching staff of state-funded higher, general and professional technical education institutions was indexed by 7.99% as from September 1, 2018.
