Maia Sandu: Forces from inside Transnistrian region escalate tensions

What has happened in the Transnistrian region the past 24 hours is an escalation of tensions by different forces from inside the region, which are interested in the destabilization of the situation, President Maia Sandu said Tuesday after the meeting of the Supreme Security Council. She noted that the authorities follow the situation with caution and vigilance and condemn any attempt to involve the Republic of Moldova into actions that can disturb the peace in the country, IPN reports.

President Sandu reminded that a number of bombs threats were reported in schools and medical institutions in the Transnistrian region. Explosions in the building of Transnistrian’s Security Ministry, the incident at the airdrome in Tiraspol and the explosion at the radio-communications center in Mayak followed. “We condemn any challenges and attempts to attract the Republic of Moldova into actions that can endanger peace in the country. Chisinau insists on the continuation of the peaceful settlement of the Transnistrian conflict,” said the President of the Republic of Moldova.

The Supreme Security Council ascertained the escalation attempts in the Transnistrian region and decided to step up traffic inspections in the Security Zone, patrolling and checks all over Moldova and on the border, increase protection at important infrastructure facilities and the alert level at all the institutions responsible for the maintaining of public order and security.

“The situation is complex and tense. We are vigilant and will take all the necessary measures to prevent an escalation, to strengthen state security and to protect our citizens. We must be calm, inform ourselves from safe sources and avoid the dissemination of false information,” stated Maia Sandu.

According to Maia Sandu, the escalation of tensions takes place on the territory that is not controlled by the constitutional authorities, but this territory belongs to the Republic of Moldova and Moldovan citizens live there. The peace and protection of citizens are the authorities’ priority.

President Sandu also said that the Moldovan authorities are ready to continue the dialogue to solve the Transnistrian conflict in a peaceful way, by diplomatic methods, so that the people in Moldova, including those from the Transnistrian region, have the chance to a peaceful and prosperous life.

A number of explosions occurred at the head office of the so-called Security Ministry of the Transnistrian region in the evening of April 25. Two more blasts were reported in Mayak village of Grigoriopol district in the morning of April 26. Consequently, two antennas that transmitted radio from Russia were damaged. No one was hurt.
