Maia Sandu: EU introduced political conditions because Government is not committed to reform

PAS leader Maia Sandu said that only one technical condition existed last November for disbursing the second tranche of the EU macro-financial assistance. But things changed after the Government was taken over by Prime Minister Ion Chicu. This way, a part of the conditions imposed by the EU, including the adoption of the law on NGOs and abrogation of the citizenship by investment law, became political conditions imposed by the EU, IPN reports.

Maia Sandu noted that if the technical condition had been voted in November 2019, the money would have reached Moldova last December.

“As the Government was replaced and the European Union saw that there was no commitment to obey the democratic principles, to continue the justice sector reform and all the reforms we initiated to fight corruption, it was decided to introduce additional political conditions given that the Government is not committed to reform. The adoption of this law became a condition,” Maia Sandu stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The politician noted that after the Government delayed the abrogation of the citizenship by investment law and the reformation of the Audiovisual Council, the EU transformed these actions into political conditions.

“The political conditions were introduced for the first time in connection with the EU’s mechanisms because of the Republic of Moldova, because of Plahotniuc’s regime, after the people in Brussels said that when there is an irresponsible government, you must have political instruments to make those who are irresponsible obey the democratic processes,” stated Maia Sandu.

She also said that besides the second tranche, Moldova could also lose the third tranche of the EU macro-financial assistance.
