After Maia Sandu on the eve said that the crisis in Ukraine prompted the Moldovan authorities to mobilize and be on alert, on Saturday the official had a telephone discussion with the President of France Fransois Macron and the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, while on Sunday she discussed over the phone with EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi, Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez, Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau and Premier of the Netherlands Mark Rutte, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.
With Commissioner Varhelyi, President Sandu discussed the security situation in the region and the impact of the war in Ukraine on Moldova. They also conferred on the measures taken by the Moldovan authorities to manage the flow of Ukrainian refugees who fled from war and ways by which the European Union can help Moldova.
Maia Sandu thanked the EU officials for the European support offered to Moldova and asked for additional assistance in satisfying the country’s immediate needs generated by the security crisis and in further building the Moldovan economy’s resilience.
The same topical subjects were discussed by Maia Sandu with Spanish Premier Pedro Sánchez, who expressed his gratitude for the joint efforts of the Moldovan authorities and citizens to welcome and help Ukrainian refugees. President Sandu said Moldova will be making every effort to further offer humanitarian assistance to the refugees.
The meeting of Maia Sandu and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau centered on the situation in Ukraine and Moldova and the humanitarian assistance offered by Moldova to the tens of thousands of Ukrainian who found refuge in Moldova as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Canadian official expressed his support for the reforms started by the Republic of Moldova the last year and expressed his conviction that Moldova should be wider supported in its efforts to strengthen democracy.
Maia Sandu’s discussion with the Ditch Premier Mark Rutte focused on the security situation in the region and the steps that need to be taken by Moldova to build its resilience. The interlocutors pleaded for a halt to the war in Ukraine and for the urgent restoration of peace in the region. President Sandu thanked the Netherlands for the support offered to Moldova in its path of European integration.
For his part, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu, Deputy Prime Minister, had a telephone discussion with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands Wopke Hoekstra, which centered on regional security, the flow of refugees caused by the war in Ukraine and the assistance offered to these.
“We appreciate the prompt response of the authorities of the Netherlands that offered €348,000 in assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, which will help us to strengthen the capacities to welcome and accommodate refugees from the neighboring country,” stated Nicu Popescu, being quoted in a press release.
He also thanked the Netherlands for its firm support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Republic of Moldova.
