Maia Sandu: Candidacy for Prosecutor General position constitutes a bargain between PSRM and PDM

Former Prime Minister Maia Sandu, chairperson of the Action and Solidarity Party, describes as an agreement between the Socialist Party and the Democratic Party yesterday's decision of the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) to submit Alexandr Stoianoglo’s candidacy for the general prosecutor position to the president of the country. The politician claims that this is a "bargain" between the PSRM and the PDM, given the political past of Stoianoglo, who was part of the Democratic Party. Also, Maia Sandu claims that the head of state, Igor Dodon, prefers a person from the prosecutor office system for a man from outside the system would have reformed the Prosecutor's Office, offering it real independence, which the president does not want, reports IPN.

"I do not know him very well, but in the Republic of Moldova we have never had general prosecutors or deputy prosecutors who would bring real independence into the system. So, people coming from the system don't know what an independent Prosecutor's Office really means, and it's hard to imagine how anyone who worked in the system would be able to secure that genuine independence, including in relation to politicians and people in high position in the state. Here we will see how independent the Prosecutor's Office can be,” said Maia Sandu on "Punctul pe azi" TV show, TVR Moldova TV station.

The former prime minister argues that the Prosecutor's Office has high profile pending cases, involving both representatives of the Democratic Party and representatives of the Socialist Party, and the new prosecutor will have to make prompt decisions on them. "If these decisions are delayed, there will be further confirmation that there has been concluded an agreement, a compromise between the two parties. If he makes convincing and right decisions, without taking into account political influences, then it will be a different situation, but it is hard to believe that this will happen”, concluded the politician.

In the PAS leader’s opinion, without an independent and brave prosecutor, who would assume the responsibility for judging properly all cases at the Prosecutor's Office, regardless of who they are targeting, no results will be reported in the investigation of the illegal financing of political parties either.

At the same time, following the decision announced yesterday by the CSP, Maia Sandu claims that President Igor Dodon is in a process of subordinating the justice to his own interests. "This is not a fight for justice, this is a fight for injustice. Unfortunately, he is still trying to subordinate the justice sector and he does so with the support of the PDM in this case,” noted the former prime minister.

On Thursday, November 28, the Superior Council of Prosecutors proposed to the Head of State the candidacy of Alexandr Stoianoglo for the position of Prosecutor General, following the conduct of the interview test.
