We are witnessing an organized effort to divide society by the refugee issue in the Republic of Moldova Something like this is unacceptable and should be stopped, said President Maia Sandu. Messages and videos showing misunderstandings or conflict situations involving Ukrainian refugees have been disseminated on social media the past two days. “The state institutions are analyzing this campaign and will intervene to stop it,” President Sandu stated in a press beefing.
The official noted the war in Ukraine creates a tense situation in the region, including in the Republic of Moldova. ”The people are scared and nervous – the Moldovan citizens who have an armed conflict on the boarder and primarily the refugees who came from the neighboring country after fleeing from the war.
“It is important not to generalize isolated incidents involving refugees, but to look for peaceful solutions to them. We should not distribute videos and posts that divide us, incite hatted for the refugees and contribute to a tenser atmosphere in the country. I urge you to be patient and tolerant towards each other. If need be, the police will anytime intervene to solve misunderstandings,” stated Maia Sandu.
She noted it is inacceptable and irresponsible for persons holding public posts and officials to speculate on incidents involving refugees for political purposes. The intentional exploitation and manipulation of tensions between people when there is a war on the border will be penalized.
Maia Sandu approved of the mobilization and solidarity of the people for helping the refugees even if Moldova wasn’t ready for this situation. Moldova is assisted by the foreign partners to cope with the humanitarian crisis and is now discussing with European states the possibility of these accepting a part of the Ukrainian refugees
