“I have questions about the contract signed with MGRES,” said President Maia Sandu. According to her, the conditions of the transaction with the self-styled Transnistrian authorities will be discussed with the members of the Government on the first occasion. She noted that the informing of the public on the issue should have been prompt as the announcement of the signing of the contract in several days of the transaction only left room for interpretations and suspicions, IPN reports.
President Maia Sandu said the purchase of electricity at the market price led to new price rises and the identification of the lowest price for the citizens is therefore welcome. But she fully dissociates herself with the Government’s decision to sign a contract with MGRES, noting that she didn’t take part in the talks and does not know details of the agreement reached with the Transnistrian side.
“We all realize the problem of the electricity price. Even if we could purchase a part of the necessary electricity from Romania at a decent price, we were to buy another part of the electricity from the market and market prices are very volatile. This market price automatically leads to a rise in charges and has an impact on the population. If you ask me exact details about this transaction, I didn’t take part in negotiations and I have some questions about the conditions in which the contract was signed. I will discuss with the Government on the first occasion,” Maia Sandu stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.
The official criticized the way in which the Government informed the public about the decision to purchase electricity from the Kuchurgan power plant. Even if Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spînu earlier said the contract with Tiraspol had been agreed with the foreign partners of the Republic of Moldova, President Sandu said she does not know about this as she didn’t discuss this issue with the development partners.
The official also said that Russia does not have any right to tell Moldova where to store its supplies of natural gas. She referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s dissatisfaction with the fact that Moldova stores natural gas in Ukraine. He even instructed the Russian minister of energy to analyze the situation.
“As long as we pay for gas, it is the property of the Republic of Moldova and we decide when we should consume it. If we do not consume the gas immediately, we decide where we can store it. It is not Putin’s business. It is only our business,” said President Sandu.
