The leader of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) Maia Sandu said a better life for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova means freedom, institutions and a political regime that obey the human rights and freedoms and when the citizens do not suffer as it happened in the past. On the other side of freedom, a better life means access to high-quality education and medical services and labor opportunities that would ensure safety.
In a video interview for IPN News Agency, the former Premier said that since declaring its independence, the Republic of Moldova witnessed ups and downs as regards the ensuring of freedom. They managed to build a particular degree of democracy, but attempts were made to undermine this democracy and it was easy for particular politicians to infringe on people’s freedoms. This happened because the Republic of Moldova is a weak state. The biggest failure was the incapacity to build a solid state with powerful institutions that would protect the citizens from such attempts to encroach upon their freedoms.
Speaking about the results achieved this year in ensuring a better life for the people, Maia Sandu said they managed to remove an authoritarian regime that violated human rights and terrorized society. During the short period of time while they had been in power, Moldova enjoyed greater democracy. “We are not in a very good situation now, but also are not in the situation in which we were in May 2019, before removing Plahotniuc,” stated the politician.
She noted that a lot of work is to be done to strengthen the state institutions and the democratic processes. On the other hand, there are aspects regarding the improvement of the living standards, creation of labor opportunities, eradication of poverty, stimulation of the business community, redirection or redistribution of public funds so that those who cannot work and are in difficult conditions could benefit from the public property.
Maia Sandu also said that an education reform is needed so that we have well-trained and well-paid teachers, very good doctors. Resources are also needed for infrastructure.
All the things that make the people’s life better are related to good governance, while the lack of good governance generates bad results. Good governance means first of all that the people who have important posts in the state do not steal public funds and are trained to efficiently organize the activity of state institutions. The thieves and corruption mainly impoverished the Moldovan citizens and left the country without investments in schools, kindergartens and roads, without high salaries and normal pensions.
Maia Sandu said authoritarian political persons should not be allowed to come to power if we want to have freedom in the future. To ensure proper social and economic conditions, we should have honest politicians who can transform the state institutions and can bring honest people and professionals to the state institutions.
The interview “PAS president Maia Sandu’s view about the state of affairs in Moldovan society at the intersection of years” forms part of the series “Crossroads of years through the angle of the ideal of living better at home” that also involve President Igor Dodon and Prime Minister Ion Chicu and the leaders of the main parliamentary parties Pavel Filip and Andrei Năstase.
