The European Action Movement (MAE) proposes solutions for preventing floods. The party’s president Veaceslav Untila told a news conference on Tuesday that no money was allocated for reinforcing levees during the eight years while the Communist governed the country, Info-Prim Neo reports. Untila said immediate measures should be taken to restore and develop the infrastructure affected by floods. “The levees on the Prut and Nistru Rivers were built during the Soviet regime. They haven’t been repaired and reinforced since then, though it should have been done every year,” he said. According to the MAE leader, in order to improve the situation in the areas threatened by floods money should be invested in infrastructure and the legislation should be modified. “The damage caused by the floods show that we need viable solutions to a number of pressing problems,” Veaceslav Untila said. The head of Cahul district Gheorghe Vasilachi said the Government must formulate a national program to improve the ecological situation, modernize the levees and clean the waters. “Romania could help us as we are neighbors. The consequences of the floods there are more dramatic,” Gheorghe Vasilachi said. He added that the Prut riverbed should be cleaned so as to increase the volume of water and obtain sand of a better quality that can be used in construction. The project might be financed by the state and foreign and national donors.
