The European Action Movement (MAE) could not picket Friday the Palace of the Republic, where the CIS summit took place, as the Chisinau Court of Appeals banned the protest at the request of the Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca, Info-Prim Neo reports. The MAE leader Anatol Petrencu said the party did not know that the mayor lodged an application with the court and that it was informed about the court's decision at 10.00. “We are disappointed with the act and attitude of the mayor general, whom we always considered our partner with democratic ideas,”Anatol Petrencu told a news conference. “How can a judge take a decision without summoning the side involved? Today, we have been presented with a fait accompli,” said jurist Nicolae Rosca, who is the vice president of the MAE. “Certainly, we could continue the protest and then fight in court and prove that we were right. But we do not want to worsen the situation because the democratic forces must be united in such moments and not allow representatives of the PCRM and the media to speculate about this,” the MAE president said. Anatol Petrencu also said that before the summit the MAE received a letter, banning the protest. “The letter was addressed to the party's first vice president Ion Neagu. It ends with an appeal to Maia Laguta (the leader of the NGO “Salvgardare” – e.n.),” Petrencu said, adding that a restriction was probably planned beforehand as Maia Laguta staged protests in the same period, but they had a different message. The MAE protested on the first day of the CIS summit, not far from the Palace of the Republic. It demanded that Moldova should withdraw from the CIS.
