Head of Parliament Marian Lupu said that he would have been involved in political discussions if he hadn’t proposed creating a commission for selecting the candidate for the post of prosecutor general. “I infringed the Speaker’s right to name the prosecutor for the first time in our history. We set up a commission that does not include politicians, only representatives of civil society and the prosecution service. I didn’t impose conditions or regulations on this commission. As a sign of respect, not only of autonomy, I committed myself to presenting the candidate they will choose in Parliament,” Marian Lupu said after the March 21 sitting of Parliament, quoted by IPN.
The Speaker said that he does not want to comment on the commission’s actions as he pledged not to interfere in its work. “They must work independently and autonomously,” he stated. He also said that if the lawmakers do not approve of the selected candidate, the dialogue will continue between civil society, the professional guild and the legislature, not between the parliamentary factions.
Eight persons are competing for the post of prosecutor general. The position was vacated by Valeriu Zubco following a hunting incident that resulted in the death of a man, in which he was involved.
