Lupu abandons presidential bid

Interim President Marian Lupu will not run for president in the repeat election on January 15, he announced at a press briefing preceding the Parliament's meeting on Wednesday, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Let me reiterate that it's not the candidacy that interests me. A number of political actors have said that we need an apolitical candidate. What caps it all is that some think that it's the candidate who should be responsible for the election of the president. I declare that I will not run in the (repeat presidential) election. This way, I'm opening the path towards identifying a candidate that is able to collect 61 votes”, stated Marian Lupu. At a meeting of the Eurointegration Alliance on Tuesday evening it was decided that a repeat presidential election would be called on January 15. While Liberal leader Mihai Ghimpu said Lupu remained the Alliance's presidential candidate, Liberal-Democrat Vlad Filat suggested Lupu should assume responsibility for a potential failure.
