Lump sums for families of participants in Chernobyl cleanup

The families whose maintainers died as a result of taking part in the Chernobyl cleanup will be offered a lump sum of 15 official average salaries set for the year before the year of death, IPN reports, quoting a Government decision.

Minister of Labor, Social Protection and Family Valentina Buliga said that members of the families are considered the husbands/wives of those who died and their children up to the age of 18 or 23 if they are students in full-time education. The minors placed in residential institutions after the death of the maintainer and the children born outside marriage, if the paternity was recognized or proven, will also receive such lump sums. If there are several applicants (wife, children, children born out of wedlock), the lump sum payment will be divided into equal parts.

The lump sum will be provided regardless of the date and cause of death of the participants in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, including servicemen who were sent to do the military service in that area and persons who found refuge in Moldova after the accident and gained Moldovan nationality.

The money for covering these costs will be allocated from the state budget and will be managed by the National House of Social Insurance. The potential recipients must submit an application and the following documents: the maintainer’s death certificate, permit of participant in the Chernobyl cleanup, identity card, marriage certificate and other documents.
