The lover of a woman who was sentenced for the murder of her husband in a village in Rascani district will be tried for complicity. He faces 15 to 20 years in jail or life, the North Office of the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases said.

The woman got ten years, while her lover fled to Russia and was wanted. He was recently detained in Moscow and extradited to Chisinau. Although he shifts responsibility onto his former lover, anticorruption prosecutors together with investigation officers accumulated enough evidence to send the case to the Balti Court for examination.

The man is held on remand at the Balti penitentiary.

The murder took place in 2008. The lover came to the 39-year-old woman’s house from another village. The woman’s husband had recently returned from abroad where he had worked. It all happened during the night, when the woman lured her husband to go to a shed in their garden, where she was waited by her lover. The latter allegedly hit the woman’s husband on the head with a hard object repeatedly and the victim was knocked down. After that, the woman covered her husband’s nose and mouth, causing his asphyxiation. Later, the two buried the body on the bank of the Ciuhur River, about 1 km away.

The man’s disappearance was reported by relatives. The woman told the police that her husband had been kidnapped by “bandits” who forbade her from informing the police. At the time of the crime, the couple’s two children were minors.

The man was detained in a day after the bones were discovered, when he was trying to leave the country. He was later released from pretrial detention and since 2018 didn’t serve the summons issued by the authorities. The victim’s wife left the village shortly after committing the crime, but was recently detained and the case was taken over by anticorruption prosecutors in March 2022.
