Losses of 440 million lei at Roscani farm due to swine fever

Losses of almost 440 million lei constitute the total damage of the farm in Roscani, affected by African swine fever. The farm's director, Ecaterina Perebinos, reports 150 million lei for the pig stock and hopes to get compensation according to the law, IPN reports.

According to Ecaterina Perebinos, the sickness of the pigs has been an extremely severe blow to the farm. Out of 65 thousand head, 10 thousand were destroyed. "We are completely devastated and destroyed. It was a very big blow for us," the farm manager added. She noted that the slaughter of the animals will also have an impact on the country's budget, as 120 million lei a year is paid on salaries, taxes and duties alone.

The farm manager says the first symptoms in pigs appeared in a sow house on March 15, and on March 16, they were immediately necropsied and samples were taken and sent to a specialized laboratory. The barn was isolated. The company benefits from Danish investment, a Danish veterinarian is also on the farm, who was contacted the next day and in discussions with him it was concluded that there was a suspicion of disease. Over the next 24 hours, clinical signs were observed in other sheds in other animals. There are now outbreaks in all the halls. In the opinion of the farm manager it is important to eradicate the outbreak as a matter of urgency because "I cannot allow animals to be tormented and die on the farm".

To eradicate the swine fever outbreak, 100 farm employees and another 50 people from outside the farm are working around the clock.

According to Catherine Perebinos, the farm covered 23% of market needs.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, said that as far as compensating the operator is concerned, it is a complex procedure. It is premature to come up with fixed calculations, Ludmila Catlabuga said. Nipping animals is in order not to spread the virus, otherwise the sector would suffer more. The priority now is to provide the processing segment with raw materials. The minister said that next week there will be meetings with processors and livestock breeders in order to secure raw material for the processing segment and maintain the shelf price.
