Losses caused by climate change estimated at about US$ 600m a year

The non-adjustment to clime change phenomena, such as droughts, forests, torrential rain, hail and high winds that become something usual is the biggest challenge for the agricultural sector. In the Republic of Moldova, the losses caused by climate change are estimated at about US$ 600 million a year, Liviu Gumovshi, director general of the Consolidated Agricultural Projects Management Unit, stated in an event entitled “Dialog Pro-Business” that involved senior state officials, IPN reports.

Liviu Gumovshi noted that short-term measures are needed, such as the allocation of sufficient financing for the special services responsible for the monitoring of hydrometeorological processes and using of subsidized agricultural insurance. “We have a fund and earmarked resources, but this system is not attractive, possibly owing to very large insurance premiums and damages that come very late. Another short-term measure is to transfer the pumping and irrigation stations from Moldova’s Water Agency to irrigation water users associations,” he said.

Attending the event, Prime Minister Ion Chicu said the authorities are aware that if they do not ensure the predictability of the business environment, they will not have success. Besides stimulating fiscal policies, they will massively invest in infrastructure as of 2020. “We will eliminate the monopoly on imports and exports and will sign free trade agreements, including with the GUAM countries. We will make effort to ensure a GDP growth to 320 billion lei,” stated the Premier.

President Igor Dodon said a number of initiatives were worked out to give a new impetus to economic development in Moldova. They provide for the reduction of the interior bodies’ pressure on businesses by excluding the Ministry of the Interior’s power to carry out economic inspections. There is a law on domestic trade aimed at supporting the national producers. Also, industrial platforms were set up in each district so as to create new jobs.

Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi said the initiative of a dialogue between the public authorities and representatives of the business sector is designed to identify pressing problems faced by the business community, which should also be a reliable partner in the resolution of the country’s socioeconomic problems.

The event brought together over 600 business entities, including from ATU Gagauzia and the Transnistrian region.
