Italy fully supports the free and conscious request to be accepted into the European Union made by the Republic of Moldova, which is a country that loves peace and is a piece of land for meetings between nations and cultures, not for conflict, the Ambassador of Italy to the Republic of Moldova Lorenzo Tomassoni stated in a reception on the occasion of the 76th anniversary of the proclaiming of the Italian Republic and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two states, IPN reports
The diplomat noted that the event is held in the context of the horrible war that is taking place only several tens of kilometers away.
“Today is a holiday for us. But we do not want to forget the war victims. On the contrary, we want to use this occasion to direct our thoughts to them, to their families, to all those who in Europe and the whole world share our values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law, economic and social development. These are also the values of the Italian Republic that we celebrate today, on the 76th anniversary, in a splendid European capital: Chisinau city. On such bases and in the interests of regional stability, Italy fully supports the free and conscious application to join the European Union of the Republic of Moldova – a country that loves peace and is a piece of land for meetings between nations and cultures, not for conflict. In this spirit, Italy and Moldova cooperate hand in hand as producers of international security within multinational peacekeeping missions. This year again, the Italians and Moldovans are together in the KFOR mission of NATO to protect the civilian population in Kosovo. For the first time, starting with this summer, the Italians and Moldovans will work together to maintain peace in Lebanon within the UNIFIL Mission of the UN. In the same spirit and for the purpose of promoting and protecting the Rule of Law in our countries, the Italian and Moldovan police forces, including the Carabineers of the two states, continue to strengthen cooperation,” stated Lorenzo Tomassoni.
According to him, the support offered on the European path to the friends and brothers in Moldova comes from the Government, Parliament and all the people of Italy. This is based on high political principles and on practical aspects designed to support the population. “I refer here to the resources with which my country, together with other members of Team Europe, other countries and international organizations support the extraordinary effort by which the Government and families in Moldova host refugees from Ukraine with generosity and efficiency. I also refer to the joint commitment, both within the European Union and at global level within G7, to solve for Moldova and together with Moldova the economic problems caused by the war, either it goes to the energy crisis or to inflation,” said Ambassador Tomassoni.
On the occasion of the anniversary, the diplomat addressed the Italians who chose to settle in Moldova and also the Moldovans who live and work in Italy.
“Not everyone knows that in Moldova, the largest community of expatriates in the EU is the Italian one. These are Italians who chose Moldova to live here, to start a family here. They believe in Moldova, love it profoundly and, with confidence, courage and perspective, decided to invest money, work and their lives here. My hope is that the Italian investors, also due to the cooperation between the Embassy and the Chambers of Commerce, will come in a larger number here. I also thank the representatives of Italian banks who, by their humble work day by day, contribute to supporting the more vulnerable social sections, including refugees. The Italians in Moldova represent a bridge between the two countries, as do the Moldovans in Italy, who are the largest community of the diaspora in the EU. I would like to address my thoughts to them too. The role of the Moldovan diaspora in Italy was and continues to be decisive not only in building a special relationship between our countries, but also in transmitting the taste and wish to be in Europe to Moldova. The movement and settlement of persons, together with the circulation of goods and capitals, are one of the key objectives of the European integration,” said Italy’s Ambassador to Moldova Lorenzo Tomassoni.
The festivities involved Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and Deputy Prime Minister Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.
