Logistics and Transport Strategy could be adopted until year's end
The Logistics and Transport Strategy, a policy which includes all areas related to transport, could be developed and adopted until the end of the year, announced Prime Minister Vlad Filat at a Wednesday meeting dedicated to the roads issue, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The Logistics and Transport Strategy will replace the existing Strategy for Road Transport Infrastructure. The Government is aware that an adequate institutional reform is crucial for the development of rail transport and civil aviation in Moldova. The Strategy will include the entire transport sector. This is why we count greatly on this Strategy to deliver reforms in this field”, said the Prime Minister, adding that the Government was assisted by international consultants with developing the Strategy.
Chaim Poram, the coordinator of the group of international financial organizations involved in the Road Sector Program Support Project, said that the existing Strategy was adopted in 2008 and had an implementation timeframe of 10 years. However, as the Moldovan economy develops, the policy needs to be updated and, according to Chaim Poran, now is the right time. “Hopefully this Strategy will be immune from politics”, he added.
Transport Deputy Minister Boris Gherasim said that Moldova annually needed 4 million lei for road rehabilitation and maintenance. “The Strategy will tell us more exactly which is the necessary amount, because the current estimations are based on 2007 prices”.
Currently, road rehabilitation works are in progress under five contracts signed in 2011, with financing from the EBRD, EIB and the European Commission. Additionally, contacts have been recently signed for the rehabilitation of two segments of the roads M2 and M3, with financing from EBRD and EIB.
