Local roads will be repaired and maintained with money from Road Fund

The community and local roads and streets that are managed by the local public authorities will be repaired and maintained with money from the Road Fund. A bill to this effect was passed by Parliament in the first reading on November 7. The current legislation provides that only national roads are repaired with money from the Road Fund, IPN reports.

In Moldova, 68% of the public roads are community and local roads and streets. The Liberal-Democratic MPs who drafted the bill said the mechanism for financing local roads by the local public authorities is economically unviable owing to these authorities’ limited financial possibilities.

Lib-Dem Liliana Palihovici, one of the authors of the bill, said in Moldova there are over 600,000 km of local roads that aren’t repaired because the legislation does not allow this. No investments have been maid in the repair of many of them for over 10 years.

The Communist MPs submitted proposals, saying that in order to avoid the distribution of money according to political criteria, there should be set a certain amount that would be allocated to all the settlements, not selectively. The bill authors said it would be impossible to allot equal sums to all the settlements. The mayors should make requests, depending on the needs. The applications will be examined by the administration board of the Road Fund.
