The inhabitants of Sangera town and of Dobrogea and Revaca communes that form part of the town on May 21 will take part in a local referendum on the building of a hazardous waste management center on the outskirts of Sangera. The date of referendum was set by the Central Election Commission on April 14, IPN reports.
In the same meeting, the Commission approved a timetable for organizing and holding the referendum and the decision concerning the constitution of town electoral districts in Sangera No. ¼.
The Ministry of Environment proposed building the hazardous waste management center with the aim of improving the management of dangerous waste in the Republic of Moldova and reducing its negative impact on the environment and people’s health. Among the key objectives are to ensure the appropriate disposal of hazardous waste accumulated in time, to manage particular flows of hazardous waste, including their collection, storing and disposal, etc.
The local administration of Sangera is against the construction of the hazardous waste management center. Mayor of Sangera Mihai Lari said the local councilors oppose the building of such a center and he will not sign the urbanism certificate for designing works as long as the population is against.
