Local elections will be much more difficult, experts

The local elections set for June 14 will be much more difficult for candidates than last autumn’s parliamentary elections. Such opinions were stated in the talk show “Reply” on Prime TV channel, IPN reports.

Liubomir Chiriac, executive director of the Institute for Development and Social Initiative “Viitorul”, said there are a number of reasons that will make the local elections difficult for those who will want to run. “The people are disappointed in the government following the parliamentary elections. Moreover, the people will be busy in the period of the elections, some with the agricultural works, while others will be on vacation. Price rises are expected, which will cause tension in society,” he stated.

Viorel Furdui, executive director of the Congress of Local Public Authorities, considers the coming elections will be difficult for the mayors who will want to run for a new term, but who do not form part of the ruling parties. “The budget resources are allocated to mayor’s offices according to political criteria. Those mayors who didn’t form part of parties didn’t receive the financial sources needed to develop the settlement. This is a serious problem. Instead of working for the community that voted them in, the mayors have to work to promote party interests,” he said

Within a telephone call, the Central Election Commission president Iurie Ciocan assured that the elections will take place in normal conditions. “On Monday, April 6, we will hold a meeting to begin the preparations for the local elections,” he stated.
