The Central Election Commission (CEC) has decided to close down the polling station in Corjova village, Dubasari district, after the Transnistrian militia blocked the electoral process, a press release from CEC reads. According to the cited source, in spite of the efforts made for the Corjova local elections to take place on June 17, the Transnistrian unconstitutional law enforcement bodies entered by force into the polling station, blocked the strongbox with the ballot papers and destroyed the booths and the ballot boxes in the station. The members of the electoral bureau were abusively driven away from the station. So as not to expose the life and health of the voters and of the electoral committee members to any peril, CEC decided to close down the polling station in Corjova, located in the “Mihai Eminescu” Lyceum. CEC registers once again blatant infringements committed by the unrecognised Transnistrian regime upon the constitutional right of the Corjova residents to vote and to elect their mayor and their local council. The commission informs the local and the international public opinion about criminal methods of the separatist regime aimed at compromising the local elections in this settlement and obstructing the right of Moldovan citizens to choose their own local administration. The 2007 Coalition also reports that the Transnistrian militia blocked the polling station in Corjova, on Sunday morning, June 17. According to the 2007 Coalition poll-watchers, Transnistrian militia damaged the booths and the ballot boxes, making the participation of the citizens in elections impossible. On June 3, because of the abusive actions of the forces subordinated to the separatist Tiraspol administration, only about 100 persons were able to vote in Corjova. The OSCE Mission to Moldova called on the central authorities of Moldova to get sure in advance that the elections in Corjova are held without problems. “Voters should be allowed to freely exercise their right to vote and to elect their mayor and their local council, without any hindrance or intimidation and all those who were involved in the events which took place in Corjova on June 3, 2007 should show restraint and flexibility this weekend in order to prevent a repetition of the tense situation experienced then” the OSCE statement said.
