The election camping prior to the June 14 local elections and the elections themselves were marked by violations of the electoral legislation, said experts of Promo-LEX Association, who presented a report on the monitoring of the local elections in a news conference, IPN reports.
Promo-LEX programs director Pavel Postica said there were reported a number of violations of the legislation, such as corruption of voters, involvement of religious organizations in campaigning, illegal campaigning, and involvement of members of electoral bodies in political activities. “There were also four cases of use of violence. I call on the election runners to be calm and respectful and not to solve the problems by using the fists. An unordinary case was the stealing of computers from an electoral office,” he stated.
Cornelia Calin, financial analyst at the Association, said many of the election runners didn’t indicate all the costs incurred in the election campaign in the financial reports submitted to the Central Election Commission. “They didn’t indicate the costs associated with the organization of concerts and remuneration of singers. Only two contestants showed sums of 2,000 to 3,000 lei. It’s clear that these figures are false as the honorariums for singers are much higher and it’s impossible for these to be on friendly terms with all the election runners. There were also staged camouflaged electoral concerts such as the one held in Orhei, which wasn’t a sports event as the organizers announced. Also, the concert dedicated to Russia Day was actually an electoral event in favor of the Party of Socialists,” he stated.
The experts of Promo-LEX also formulated a series of recommendations and requested Parliament to make the electoral legislation concerning the leaving of posts by candidates running in elections and the rights and obligations of the persons leaving temporarily their posts more explicit so as to prevent the use of administrative resources in the future. A call was also made to the law enforcement bodies to react in accordance with the law to all the cases of violation of the electoral legislation.
