Local deputy says Gagauzia can survive as independent state

Gagauzia is an economically developed region and will be able to survive if it gains independence, Ivan Burgudji, who is a member of the People’s Assembly of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, said in an interview for the region’s public TV channel GRT, IPN reports.

According to the deputy, by its legal status Gagauzia is more than a federation subject and has grounds to gain broader independence. “Gagauzia has the right to become an independent state. It was independent. It is now not about the subject of federation, if the law (the law on the special legal status of Gagauzia – IPN note) is not implemented in the future, but about confederative organization,” stated Ivan Burgudji.

As to the economic independence, Ivan Burgudji said he is sure that the region will not face financial difficulties and will be able to survive. “They take a lot now from us, but give us only a small portion,” he stated.

Experts are skeptical about the possibility of Gagauzia obtaining independence. Politologist Bogdan Tirdea said such a possibility could appear only if Moldova faced the risk of losing its independence. Besides, the region’s economic potential cannot ensure financial independence.
