Local Democracy Week to be launched in Moldova

The European Local Democracy Week (ELDW) will roll out Moldova-wide for the first time. The drive will be launched on October 13 at a national conference broaching topics related to the democratization of society. The Moldovan Post will also launch a mark with the ELDW's logo, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Local Public Administration Minister (LPAM), Valentin Guznac, told a news conference on Thursday that the ELDW is a European event held annually, pursuing the simultaneous organization of national and local events attended by local authorities from the member countries of the Council of Europe. “ELDW pursues to promote the values of local public administrations and to create additional opportunities to citizens to get involved and to contribute to change the situation in their communities. Special attention is granted to the youth to enhance their level of democratic participation locally,” the minister has said. Events as open doors at local administrations, exhibitions on localities' history, publishing booklets about local administrations, meeting between local officials with representatives of the civil society, public debates on local issues will be held in localities. They also want to set up a youth council to tackle their issues. Young people will be invited to visit local authorities and meet local officials. The first ELDW was launched on the occasion of the 15th session of the Ministerial Conference of the European Ministers dealing with local and regional government in Valencia (15-16 Oct., 2007).
