Local authorities willing to free the capital city from wastewater odour

City authorities and Chisinau’s main water supplier, Apa Canal Company (ACC), will take joint measures to solve the problem of the unpleasant smell coming from the wastewater treatment facilities in the city until the start of their reconstruction, scheduled for the nearest future. ACC director Constantin Becciev says the Chisinau Wastewater Plant stores some 600,000 cubic metres of dried mud, which has to be urgently removed from the storing facilities. The poor financial situation of the company, including the debts of 4 million lei for fuel and 2 million for spare parts, delays the repairs. Moreover, only a half of the vehicles and machinery owned by the enterprise can be engaged in transport activities. Becciev says that if the City Hall helps remove mud from 35 hectares, the surface designed for the storage of mud could be reduced to 10 hectares. One of the solutions is to treat the mud with chemicals that would reduce odour. Another solution is to buy specialised equipment for primary dehydration, supposed to have the same effect. The plant is daily treating about 24000 cu m of wastewater. The tender for the reconstruction of the Chisinau Wastewater Plant was announced in late May. The Capital Constructions Division will accept bids until August 21. So far, six companies have purchased the tender book, among which the German WTE Gmbh, the Italian Engineering Consulting and the Czech Ircon Ltd. The wastewater treatment facility was put into operation in the period from 1964 to 1977 in several stages and is now in a deplorable condition.
