An 8-year-old Chisinau girl told the Police she has been repeatedly subjected to sexual molestation, including sodomy, by the domestic partner of her mother. According to the National Centre for Child Abuse Prevention (NCCAP), the girl told her story to the manager of a local community centre for youth and children, who then reported the case to the district police officer. The girl claims her mother knew all about the abuses, but she didn’t take any action. The girl mentioned that her 16-year-old sister ran away from home because he had been also molested by their mother’s domestic partner. According to NCCAP, the girl’s mother and her domestic partner have a common child aged 2, who is neglected by both of them and whom his mother tried to throttle at the age of 1. Police said both of them have records. To ensure the girl’s safety, she was admitted to a placement centre for children in difficulty. The guardianship authorities have initiated procedures for terminating the mother’s parental rights as to all her children. At present the girl is undergoing psychological testing, at the request of the prosecuting officer. If the tests prove that the girl indeed lived the nightmare of being sexually abused, they will serve as reason for initiating criminal proceedings against the molester.
