‘Lights out’ event to be staged on Stefan cel Mare Blvd.

The international community on the last Saturday of March holds annually the Earth Hour that encourages households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour and raises awareness about the need to take action on climate change. In Moldova, the event will be marked in the Great National Assembly Square between 16.00 and 22.00, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to a communiqué from the Chisinau City Hall, the Earth Hour 2011 was the biggest year in the campaign's five year history, reaffirming it as the largest ever voluntary action for the environment. It took place in a record 5,251 cities and towns in 135 countries. It had an estimated reach of 1.8 billion people across the globe. Moldova has celebrated the event since 2008. It is organized by the Ministry of the Environment, the public association SalvaEco, CRCT Gutta-Club and Gas Natural Fenosa. This year, the Earth Hour activities will start with contests for children, and informative videos and audios. The official part of the ceremony will take place between 20.30 and 21.30 and will involve representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and the Mayor General of Chisinau. It will be followed by a fire show and a concert. In 2011, the global campaign included the Beyond the Hour initiative. A new “60+” logo was introduced, representing a commitment to add to Earth Hour a positive act for the planet that goes beyond the hour. The street lighting will be turned off in the perimeter of the Great National Assembly Square, the section between Pushkin St and Banulescu Bodoni St, between 20.30 and 21.30. The lights on the section between 1 Stefan cel Mare Blvd. and 200 Stefan cel Mare Blvd. will be turned off between 20.30 and 20.45. The call to become involved in the Earth Hour global campaign was imprinted on 700 posters placed inside 250 trolleybuses and 100 buses. The posters also contain useful pieces of advice on how to reduce power consumption.
