Light a candle for victims of domestic violence

The volunteers for the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign are holding today in Stefan cel Mare Park an action themed “Light a Candle for Victims of Domestic Violence” to raise public awareness of this widespread problem. For several hours, between 2:00 and 6:00 PM, the participants in the event will discuss the problems associated with domestic violence and the ways of fighting this phenomenon. The organisers will present information and a number of case studies on the topic. The event will also feature a music component and the screening of a documentary showing the world of human trafficking through the eyes of the victims. The event will culminate with a symbolic gesture, when all the participants will light candles for those who became victims of domestic violence. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign is a global effort that has involved approximately 2000 organisations in 154 countries. The campaign takes place from November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women, until December 10, International Human Rights Day; symbolically linking violence against women with violations of human rights. Activities in Moldova are conducted in partnership with the OSCE Mission, the Independent Journalism Centre, OWH TV Studio, the Centre for Partnership Development, UNFPA, the Gender Centre, Amnesty International, Peace Corps, the International Organisation for Migration, La Strada, Shelter Casa Marioarei, and the American Bar Association’s Central and East European Law Initiative.
