Lifetime allowance for trainers of awarded athletes

The trainers of athletes who medaled at the Olympic Games, world or European championships will get a lifetime monthly allowance, IPN reports, quoting an amendment approved by the Cabinet to the Law on Physical Education and Sport.

The legislative initiative was proposed by MPs in a move to ensure social equity between professional sportspersons who already receive such allowances and their trainers.

The allowance will be paid to trainers who reached retirement, worked for at least 20 years and during the past four years trained athletes who achieved remarkable results at international level.

The new regulations refer also to persons who trained sports teams of the former USSR.

Currently, there are about 10 trainers who meet the mentioned conditions and will benefit from such allowances.

The allowance will be of different sizes and will depend on the results achieved by the trained athletes. For example, for a gold medal won at the Olympic Games, the trainer will get a monthly allowance equal to an average official salary.

About 550,000 lei a year is needed for the purpose. The money will be allocated from the state budget.

The bill is to be considered and adopted by Parliament.
