Library community celebrates National Reading Day: Every book read – A step toward a United Society

Every book read is a step toward a wiser, more empathetic, and united society. Reading opens a window to knowledge and imagination. The power of the written word and its impact across generations were celebrated on Friday, February 14, at an event marking National Reading Day. Hosted by the National Library of the Republic of Moldova, the event gathered figures from the fields of education, culture, and library science, IPN reports.

Elena Pintilei, General Director of the host institution, emphasized the need to promote reading as an essential element of education and culture, especially in a world dominated by technology and fast information. She described books and reading as a refuge.

National Reading Day coincides with the 90th anniversary of the late poet Grigore Vieru’s birth. “A poet with a Romanian soul, who, through his verses, instilled love for language, homeland, and people,” noted Elena Pintilei, adding that Vieru’s work remains a source of reflection and sensitivity.

Minister of Culture Sergiu Prodan announced continued support for three national projects—Central Reading, The Open Book, and Reading Together—under the ‘Access to Culture’ program, with significant funding allocated this year. The funds will be used to strengthen community life across Moldova, with local libraries playing a central role. “We aim for self-sufficient community life in every locality, with the village library at its core,” Prodan stressed.

He also highlighted the importance of rebuilding connections between the National Library and local libraries through joint events and services, asserting that “The library should become a vital and vibrant place within every community.”

Member of the Parliament Liliana Nicolaescu-Onofrei, Chair of the Parliament’s Committee on Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sports, and Mass Media, underscored reading’s impact on children and youth. She highlighted how reading fosters language development and equips children to face intellectual and emotional challenges.

National Reading Day was established in Moldova in 2022, coinciding with both the global World Read Aloud Day, held annually in early February, and the birth anniversary of poet Grigore Vieru on February 14.
