Liberals want hospitals to offer free blood
The Liberal Party's parliamentary group proposed a bill which would oblige public and private healthcare institutions to offer free blood to patients with medical insurance and who provide donors.
The proposal’s author, MP Gheorghe Brega, argued that it wasn’t fair that patients had to pay for donor blood according to a price-list after putting them to the trouble of buying an insurance and find the donor. “Our patients have the right to choose the institution and the doctor to treat them”, he told Info-Prim Neo.
The bill aims to eliminate a number of contradictions in the legislation. The Law on blood donation and transfusion stipulates that blood transfusion services have a strictly public and nonprofit status. However, in February 2012 the Minister of Health singed an order on the “offer of blood products services and their cost”, which stipulates that the “services are paid for according to the prices of blood products, reviewed and approved yearly by the Minister of Health”.
