Liberals support European integration amendment to Constitution conditionally

The Liberal Party MPs will provide the necessary votes to introduce the words “European integration” in the Constitution only after the parliamentary majority changes article 13 of the Constitution so that Romanian is recognized as the official language.

PL leader Mihai Ghimpu told a press conference on Wednesday, December 20, that the Romanian language must be added to the Constitution as a national value and only afterwards the supreme law can be amended to include European values. „If we keep the Moldovan language, we cannot talk about European values. If we want these values, it means saying no to lies. The Moldovan language is a lie invented by those who invaded us”, said Ghimpu.

Valeriu Munteanu, deputy president of PL, argued that the Constitution has to be harmonized with the Declaration of Independence, which says that the language spoken in Moldova is Romanian. According to Munteanu, if this isn’t carried out now, it won’t happen anytime in the foreseeable future.

“The Romanian language is home here. The Constitutional Court confirmed this at the request of five Liberal MPs. But the next step, modifying article 13 in the Constitution, a technical thing, hasn’t been taken yet. It seems some of our politicians and parties still share the Soviet mentality and use the Romanian language as a tool to manipulate public opinion”, said Corina Fusu, first deputy president of PL.

The initiative to introduce European integration in the Constitution comes from the Democratic Party. When it received the green light from the Constitutional Court, it had the support of 36 MPs. In order to pass, a Constitutional amendment needs 67 votes. The parliamentary majority has 51 votes.
