Liberals seek to regulate surrogacy

The Liberal Party is proposing to introduce legislation to regulate surrogacy and surrogate mothers, Info-Prim Neo reports. Surrogacy would be allowed only to infertile heterosexual couples that are relatives of first or second degree with the surrogate mothers, based on an agreement certified by a notary public. “Relatives have all the right. Most women want children and if we deny them the joy of motherhood, it would be a great mistake”, said Liberal MP Gheorghe Brega. The proposal was criticized by the Liberal-Democrats, with MP Valeriu Ghiletchi arguing that, from a moral point of view, it would contravene the values of the Church; from a social point of view, there is a risk of young women to be exploited; and from a scientific point of view, research in this area is insufficient. “It's not a good idea to make Moldova a field for experiments in this area. Many civilized countries disallow it in their legislation”, said Ghiletchi. The proposal will return to Parliament after relevant NGOs are consulted.
