Liberals seek penalties for those who deny Stalinist deportations

Denying Stalinist deportations and Communist political repressions should be punished with a fine or community service, according to a proposal of Liberals Mihai Ghimpu, Ion Hadarca and Valeriu Munteanu. The initiative that actually stipulates amendments to the Contravention Code was registered today, July 3, in the Parliament. According to the legislative initiative, denying Stalinist deportations in the Soviet Socialist Moldavian Republic and other forms of Communist repressions through speeches, writings, drawings and any other textual or graphic representation means sold, distributed or displayed in public, will be punished with a fine between 50 and 100 conventional units or up to 60 hours of non-remunerated community service. Liberal MPs noted that the new stipulation of the Code of Administrative Offenses wouldn’t limit the right to freedom of expression, guaranteed by the Constitution, because it referred only to public actions and means of mass communication, thus maintaining a legal framework adequate to the state of the law. Proposed amendments won’t limit the people’s right to personal opinion as they stipulate penalties only for actions of volitional denial of historical truths. According to official Soviet documents, cited by PL, the Soviets deported over 70,000 people, although the historians estimate much larger figures.
